The Term "Hipster"

Well without further ado, the term Hipster is a subculture with...

Trendsetters.
Meaning they set the trend or at least think they do, they also do not like to wear the same things others are wearing, in all actuality they despise it(by "others" I mean they do not like to wear what others wear outside their subculture)
The uniform of the hispters are skinnies, v-necks, hoodies/ cardigans and beanies.
They usually shop at American Apparel
Urban Outfitters
or H&M
which are all marketed towards this sub-culture.
They also shop at thrift stores for the one-of-a-kind-look. Despite the fact that many of the hipsters are in fact well off. IRONY.
They also have either choppy.
messy.
short.
long.
bangs
or all of the above hair.

Music snobs
meaning they hate the mainstream and listen to bands/ music artists who are "subterranean" They also think their music taste is superior.

Now most of them either listen to
a. Indie (independent music) tends to be very mellow
b. New wave, electro, electronic etc. (Think raves and dance music) or both. Never well almost never do they listen to the radio although lately many hipsters have been found guilty of being fond of Lady Gaga.

"artsy"
many of them say they love art but in reality they know nothing about art and couldn't tell you anything about the concepts of art. Also many "hispters" love to take photos and call it art but very few have talent.
That doesn't necessarily mean all hipsters are brainless about art; but unfortunately more than often most are.

Other things that hipsters can be seen doing/living
The live in urbanized places
smoke gratuitous amounts of nicotine
drink miller lite
drink tons of coffee
eat sushi
eat tofu
try to be vegetarian although secretly they are not.
go to the local hot spots such as clubs, shows, bars, and venues.
read obscure literature, nothing mainstream.
Ride bikes with no brakes, preferably skinny rimmed bikes.

Again this is just one definition of the term. there are many and this is the most basic and stereotypical definition there is--

Again why do I care? because I just so happen to work at a place where people assume only "hispters" are welcomed to work. Actually no, not true you just have to have some common sense in dressing yourself and have a shinning personality. Duh. Many of the people I work with are in fact not even remotely close to being considered a hipster but everyone always says, "oh you have to be a hipster to work at urban" well actually think again.

again Hipsterism is a subculture, just like punks, goths, skaters, jocks, etc. Except many hate hipsters because they believe that they are assholes. Wrong again. Talk to some, they are actually very sweet and not stuck up like they appear to be. Also many times the reason they may seem stuck up is because they were huge losers in high school which leads me to my next point.
Many hispters were actually into the "emo" /"goth" / "punk" / "scene" subculture when they were in high school and progressed/ outgrew out of them. So more than likely hipsters can never be found in high school.

Again there is so much more about this subculture but that would be a term paper so I will end it here with the Queen of the hipsters, Cory Kennedy although Zoey Deschanel is said to have taken her place.
